    I think there is a subtler psychological basis for their deviation - I suggest their desire and intentions are at the outset genuinely pointed towards achieving purity. Consider- priests are not allowed to even contemplate loving a woman, & nothing is done to alleviate their sexual frustration - yet they still have physical desires, & purity is that which is desired, so purity is desired in physical form, the form of a child. To the Priest it seems as if he is possessed by The Beast. The only Devil is the animal, the beast within himself, that he attempted to suppress without the means.
